Celtic 4 Falkirk 0: He play on the left…
By: Matt | April 9th, 2009
…He plays on the riiiiight, Aiden McGeady makes the, well Bains on this occasion, look shite. Aiden McGeady was easily the man of the match, as Celtic cruised to a 4-0 victory. Falkirk came out at the beginning of the match and was able to control the first fifteen minutes against the Champions, but Celtic eventually got their footing and were able to assert their dominance for the rest of the match. Celtic’s pressure paid off in the 29th minute when Gary Caldwell got his foot on a nice headed flick on from Scott McDonald via a Shunsuke Nakamura freekick. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink got his second goal in as many games after getting his foot on a good cross from Andreas Hinkel after a great run by the German, Aiden McGeady scored a 25 yard cracker of a goal from the middle of the park, and Darren O’Dea volleyed home the fourth goal in stoppage time. Now for some thoughts…
-Scott Brown’s challenge in the first half that subsequently led to a yellow card means that Brown will miss the next three matches. Brown has been the front runner for the SPL Player of the Year this year, but he still has the tendency to hacksaw opponents shins and pick up unnecessary bookings. While the schedule for the post-split matches has yet to be published, I certainly would not be surprised if the match against Rangers just haaaapened to be that first match that Brown would miss.
-Did you hear that sound? It sounded like it was coming from the Bavarian section of Germany. Yes, that was the sound of Bayern Munich knocking on their bank’s door, trying to see if they could secure a bigger loan to buy Aiden McGeady. McGeady has had a few good performances after an average year for the Republic of Ireland international. The Bavarians better be ready to write a lot of zeros to both Celtic and McGeady if they want to procure his services.
-After a good performance against Hamilton, Captain Stephen McManus did not turn in another great performance, but was decent. McManus had a couple bad give aways and passes, but was dominant in the air, pinging a header off the crossbar.
-Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was able to get his name on the score sheet again. After not being able to hit the ocean on the beach, another goal for the struggling striker is great. Unfortunately, the only reason Vennegoor of Hesselink was in the match was a first half substitute of Georgios Samaras after the Greek had to limp off the pitch. However, it seems like Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink seem to work better together than McDoanld and Samaras.
-Is there any debate about whether or not Marc Crosas should be starting in the midfield every game out? In the ten games he’s appeared, Celtic have scored 36 goals and are undefeated in those ten matches. Paul Hartley is a good leader, but he is certainly on the down slope of his career, while Crosas is a growing star for the Bhoys. Hopefully Barcelona do not notice this though, as they have the option to take Crosas back if they wish in two years.
