Hibernian 3-2 Celtic–Boruc Blunders

By: JT | September 24th, 2007

Celtic were defeated by Hibernian at Easter Road yesterday when world class keeper Artur Boruc made two uncharacteristic blunders, gifting the Hibees a 3-2 victory. Whaddya gonna do? The man has saved Celtic so many times that its almost impossible to count. Freaking out about this one match is nonsensical. Even the Holy Goalie is human after all, and laying too much blame at his feet is just silly. He held his hand up afterward and took the blame for the loss, so you have to admire that. He’s the confident sort. He’ll be bouncing back soon enough.

For me, Celtic did enough to draw the match, or perhaps even to win it, so its not too much of a concern. Next up, the Celts are away at Dundee in the CIS Cup on Wednesday. Expect a mix of first team regulars, with guys like Sno, Riordan, Zurawski, and Killen getting a run out.

The lowlights from Sunday:

Yeah, Boruc deserves the occasional slip-up, and it’s just as well for Celtic that he gets them both in one match rather than spread out. He’s a hell of a keeper, and if anything, this will just motivate him more. Any idea if Mark Brown will get a chance to play half in this week’s cup tie?

I actually thought about putting Mark Brown’s name in there as someone expected to play, but it really depends on how WGS feels Boruc’s confidence looks during the week. If good, then we’ll see Brown. If not, expect Boruc. Brown certainly deserves a match based upon early season performances.

Geez, one bad day and everyone’s out to hang the guy.

All that loss to Hibs proved is that a road game four days after a bad Champions League road loss in the Ukraine (!) is not a situation that produces a win. As it was, Celtic almost tied that game. And where was Hibs while the SPL champs were getting their asses handed to them on the steppes? Sitting back in Scotland with nowhere to go, which is exactly where they’ll be next year at this time as well.

The first and third goals I would suppose are what Boruc is taking himself to task for. (The second one was clearly a defensive screw-up.) The first one looked like it took an odd bounce up. He misread the bounce. The third just got away from him. Boruc is good for about 3-4 mistakes a year, the fact that he got two of them out of the way in one game should be good news.

Maybe he should go back and get those gloves and have a ceremonial burning of them back at Parkhead. Looking over their schedule for October, though, I don’t think he’ll have to worry. I predict he gives up a grand total of 3-5 goals the entire month. He’ll put that game behind him like all stud athletes do.

TB, I haven’t heard about too many people that are down on Boruc after this match. Everyone expects him to bounce back. But Mark Brown does deserve a game, just because its a Cup match and not because of Boruc’s errors.

Brownie has the potential to be one of the best keepers in Scotland - I wonder how long you’ll hold onto him with such a consistent starter as Artur. We certainly still miss him at Inverness.

So Boruc, who is today one of the best keepers in the world, after some weaker performances (playing with pain and needing surgery) gets a music clip with a choice of his blunders, some of them repeated from different angles to look as different ones. What a malice! What kind of petty dwarf would do a thing like that? To make a short movie of it? Mark Brown to replace Boruc? Are you kidding?
There are some keepers whose blunders will pass not seen, there are others whose any misstep will be widely publicized and memorized for years. Their miracle saves will be only mentioned, but when miracle do not come they get this petty, wicked treatment.
I remember the time when another Polish keeper Dudek has been judged as worse than a young, sympathetic rookie Carson. Dudek played only a couple unimportant matches for Liverpool after the Champions League Cup win. Kept under contract for a year not playing. Rafa asked 12 millions for him. Nice reward for his contribution for the Reds.
Somehow Reina has been never as good in a cup matches as in the Premiership. In fact Reina was to blame for the World Cup defeat, when Dudek has been deprived of his right to continue.
Ill will is an enemy of the fair judgment. It does not take to be a great specialist to see that this will be the season Celtic will go down.

Wow, Pio, that was a bit over the top. The highlights were the best ones of the match that I could find, as the quality of the film will attest. Not very good at all. Also, Boruc picked up his injuries on international duty well after the Hibs match shown here.

The discussion of Mark Brown replacing Boruc was about a midweek Cup tie and nothing more. To suggest otherwise is just laughable.

Celtic is going down? Where exactly?
