Still Optimistic

While I’ll never be pleased by a Celtic loss, I am not as down as many Tims are after Celtic’s dissapointing 1-0 loss to St. Mirren to end their Scottish Cup Run. We obviously knew that St. Mirren would probably be motivated after the 7-0 gubbing they received the week before. Scott Brown had a goal waved off due to offsides, and it was probably Celtic’s best chance of the day. Stephen McManus continued his shaky season by pulling down Craig Dargo in the box and St. Mirren converted the resulting penalty. It was not one of Celtic’s better performances of the season, but I still think the correct line up was put out there. Unless you are Even Barcelona has an off week or two and hopefully this cup tie was just an off week. Honestly I would have preferred to give some injury prone guys like Marc Crosas and Shunsuke Nakamura the week off to rest up for next week’s CIS Cup final against Rangers . While the Scottish Cup would have been nice, as Rangers can attest to, the fixture build up can be detrimental to a close title chase. While I will accept any and all silverware for Celtic, the SPL title is the main goal. Sunday’s CIS Cup final will however give either Celtic or Rangers some momentum going into the title chase. With both sides splitting the honors evenly in their matches played so far, a Cup final win over Rangers would give Celtic some momentum and the belief that they control their own destiny the rest of the way. A convincing win over the blue side of town would be another (and perhaps final) blow to Rangers confidence. Plus, it’s a Celtic-Rangers match, so there are all the bragging rights that go with that.
